Montana Federal Credit Union has recently learned that someone is counterfeiting our cashier’s checks. The counterfeit checks that were discovered were sent in response to an internet advertisement for nanny services.

The checks were for $3800.00 and the individuals who received the checks were asked to cash them, keeping $250.00 and wiring the rest back via Western Union. The counterfeit checks are remarkably like our legitimate checks except for the following: There is no credit union phone number on the counterfeit checks; the counterfeit checks spell out the entire month in the date whereas our legitimate checks abbreviate the month to three letters; and the endorsement lines on the back of the counterfeit checks are tilted slightly.
